The Complete Blood Count (CBC) test is used to monitor the overall health and evaluate the cells that make up the blood. Maintaining a good blood count is a great indicator of overall health and detects a variety of diseases and conditions, such as infections, anemia, and leukemia. Any increase or decrease in cell counts may indicate an underlying medical problem. An assessment of total blood count may also be done to keep track of an existing medical condition or treatment. There are several features of the blood that are measured in the Complete Blood Count.
The Red blood cell evaluates:
● Red Blood Cell Count. An RBC (erythrocytes) totals the number of red blood cells that are present in the sample of blood. The low or high Red blood count can cause a variety of symptoms and health complications.
● Hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a protein found in the red blood cells that carries oxygen to the body's organs and tissues and transports carbon dioxide from organs and tissues back to the lungs. A low level of hemoglobin can be a sign of anemia.
● Hematocrit. A hematocrit test measures the proportion of red blood cells in the blood. The value is expressed as a percentage or fraction.
The CBC blood test also provides important information on various red blood indices including
● Mean corpuscular volume (MCV). It is defined as the average size of RBCs in the blood also known as "erythrocytes".
● Mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH). It denotes the average quantity of hemoglobin present in a single red blood cell.
● Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) is a calculated measurement of the average concentration of hemoglobin inside red blood cells.
● Red cell distribution width (RDW) is a measurement of the variation in the size of red blood cells. Any big difference in their sizes could indicate a problem like anemia.
White blood cell tests
White blood cells (WBC) count. White blood cells are vital components of the blood and help fight infection. They are essential for health and well-being. A CBC measures the number and five types of white blood cells present (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils).
Platelet tests
● Platelets(thrombocytes) assist in blood clotting. The platelet count is a test that measures the number of platelets in your blood sample.
● Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a measurement of the average size of platelets(a type of blood cell that helps prevent bleeding)
